OUR BELIEF STATEMENTS
We believe that . . .
Every child learns best in a safe and caring environment where high academic expectations, self-esteem, good character, healthy lifestyles and an appreciation for the arts are promoted.
A variety of teaching strategies, meaningful materials and emerging technology should be used to maximize student potential and individual learning styles.
Every child should be given a variety of assessment opportunities to demonstrate achievement and application of learning.
A quality education, continuous improvements and positive communications are the shared responsibility of the school, home and community.
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
Our commitment to education is driven in part by the fact that we believe children to be best served by committed and enthusiastic practitioners who relish being in the company of children. We believe that if children are happy, secure and feel cared for at school then learning can flourish, be enjoyable, safe and exciting. Schools should be places where children can thrive, develop and grow and our role as teachers is to facilitate this. In conjunction with this we feel that the best teaching is informed by careful professional assessment, which then informs planning. Rigorous assessments from a variety of sources such as assessment for learning, baseline data, the Foundation Stage Profile and end of key stage assessment tests build up a clear picture of individual pupil and group needs and offer an indication of the school’s strengths and weaknesses in its teaching & learning. Good planning supports both teachers and children in achieving their potential. It should be coherent, consistent, based on hard evidence of current performance and lead to clearly understood measurable improvements.
At Eaton Mill we believe that education should develop all children to their maximum potential. We support a clear emphasis on literacy, numeracy, ICT and Spanish, as we believe that these are the skills our children need to support other key areas of learning. This is best delivered through a stimulating, exciting curriculum which can be seen first hand in Eaton Mill. The vibrant classroom areas, the opportunities for children to participate in theatrical productions, musical competitions and the like offer children the chance to thrive and express themselves through many different mediums. We believe that opportunities such as these are of equal importance to the formal curriculum as they assist in establishing self-confidence and self-esteem in all young people. Children with low self-esteem are unlikely to persevere, will not take risks in their learning and are much more likely to disrupt the learning of others. We must celebrate achievement whenever we see it. We should encourage responsibility and self-confidence in a child’s quest for knowledge and their development as a social being. Our responsibility therefore is to create a challenging, stimulating learning environment where our objectives are clear but where children have the confidence and ability to question, examine and not be afraid to make mistakes.
